NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE - Tuesday 14 January 2013

Newcastle Central Station - arrival of the travelling band
Switch to local dialect - Geordie (where you call someone Pet)

The city is commonly known as Newcastle and is situated on the north bank of the River Tyne.  The city is a metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear, North East England and is historically part of Northumberland.  Founded in the second century the city grew up in the area that was the location of the Roman settlement.

This picture taken from the High Level Bridge which the train travels on.  The blue bridge is the Swing Bridge

This is the famous Tyne Bridge built in 1928.  The structure looks very similar to the coat hanger in Sydney Harbour.  The reason being is that Dorman Long of Middlesbrough were the same engineering company responsible for both impressive structures.

Note sunshine - yes is was sunny and was quite a nice morning.  About 6C, no rain, clear air

a

A short cut through Market Street past some really lovely little shops

A familiar sight
For those of you who don't know not all pillar boxes are the same.  On every post box in the UK, the royal Cipher can be seen of the reigning monarch at the time of installation.
The GR marking relates to either
King George V (1910-1936) - The current Queen of England's Grandfather or
King George VI (1936 - 1952) - The current Queen of England's Father

Too much to see and too little time.  Perhaps a return visit?  Nice people.
